Happy Halloween!
Hope you all have a safe and enjoyable day!
All of these shots were taken last night under very challenging lighting. We had turned off all the lights to get the full effect of jack-o-lanterns we carved earlier. The only light was that from the TV (we were watching the It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown) and I decided to grab my camera and see if I could possibly capture the kids expressions. They were so excited to be up past bed time and watch a "movie" with popcorn! I don't know if it was a sugar crash or if they were utterly enthralled by the show but they were looking quite zombie-like!
All the frames are shot at f1.8. Not only to I love the shallow DOF but I had to have the aperture wide open to get what little light was available. To help with the low light situation I also set my ISO to 1600. I kept the shutter at 1/8, anything lower, you increase the risk of camera shake. (As a general rule of thumb you usually don't hand hold a frame with the shutter speed set below the focal length because camera shake becomes so much of a problem.) The low light made focusing difficult to say the least but I managed to come away with several sweet shots to remember the night, and that is what it's all about!
